Off to Kalamaki 15/08/10

« on: February 10, 2010, 10:22:14 pm »

Hi
I have been to Zante 5 times now...argassi and kalamaki, but as they are getting noisier, we have booked up for 11 nights at the Vasilikos Beach Hotel. There will be myself, my husband an my 10 year old daughter.

Has anyone been to this hotel, what is it like. Any tips? We are bed and breakfast...are there places nearby to eat at?

Do we need to hire a car? I have booked with direct holidays for the first time, and i cant see transfers on the booking sheet anywhere so im assuming that we need to make our own way there. We land at 5.40am... will there be taxis or car rental places open at that time?

Hi there. We have travelled with Direct Holidays a couple of times and have had transfers included. I think you should check with them. In the unlikely event that there are no transfers included I think there will be taxis at the airport for your arrival, (unless they are on strike). There have always been taxis there no matter what time we have arrived. Hope this helps.

Argassi getting noisier? Undecided .
When did you last visit,1990's or did you recently stay at the comodoski.
I have only seen argassi getting quieter and quieter over the last few years.
Hope you enjoy vasilikos,im sure you will get the peace and quiet you seek. Smiley Wink

There are always taxis at the airport when the planes land, I'm not too sure about the carhire offices (even if they are open you may have to queue a bit ). We always prebook our hire car & the last couple of years we've used Faros in Argassi & cannot praise them too highly. We book online with them & they deliver to the airport, they don't ask for a deposit up front, you just pay by credit card when they deliver. We've used many companies over the years & can honestly say FAROS were the best yet by a long way, we'll be booking again soon for this year. I think Vasilikos is a bit remote & if we were staying there I would say a car is a must, although it seems very nice there I'd still prefer argassi

Hi we have staying in Vasilikos for the past 8 years in an area just a few Kms from your hotel.  We have always rented a car as the Vasilikos area is quite remote some 18Kms from Zakynthos town.  Your hotel is only 100m from St Nicks beach which can become busy due to the large water sports centre.  There are a few other beaches which you could easily walk to – Plaka (http://www.plakabeach.com/) and Banana.  Plaka would be about 5 – 7 mins walk and Banana another couple of minutes across the shore from Plaka.  All of the other beaches would require transport but the are the best on the island.  Last year Plaka was charging 7 or 8 Euros for 2 beds and a shade but has the best facilities.  There is a grass area where you can sit for free, a snack bar, full restaurant, toilets and free parking, most of it in the shade.

There are a few tavernas / cafes near your hotel but for a more varied selection you will need to go back up the hill (about 1.5Km) to the main road.  If you turn right towards Argassi you will come to the main village in approx 1.5 Km or if you turn left towards Garakas you will find plenty of country tavernas that serve authentic Greek food.  At the top of the hill at the junction with the main road is a taxi rank where most of the radio taxis in the area wait.

If you want more info on the area and beaches just ask.  If you use Google Earth I can send you some pins that will show the location of the beaches and tavernas.  I have some photos of a few of the beaches on - http://phil.whitcombe.org.uk

Have a great holiday.

Thanks for you help all of you thats great  Smiley

Weve stayed in Argassi at the Family Inn Hotel in 1999, and the Katerina Palace in 2004.

Stayed in Kalamaki in 2005, 2007 & 2008 at the Roseland Hotel.

All have been brilliant holidays and hoping this one will be just as good, I just love the island so much, it keeps pulling me back.
