Mini bus hire
« on: January 18, 2011, 01:51:39 pm »
We are off to Alykes in July with all the family, 12 of us altogether, has anyone got any advice about hiring a mini bus, do you think it would be easier to hire 3 cars, we do have enough drivers.  Also, where is the best place to hire from?

Thanks

Sue

PS - Im sitting at my desk thinking of my holiday and counting down the days!

We hired a mini bus in Lagana a couple of years ago, and found it great . As for hiring, try  Euro Alfa in Tsilivi, Angelos and Maria are so helpful, not sure if he has mini buses though, but know he will do all he can to help. :) email address is:-

sorry ive mis-informed you,the biggest mini bus seats 9 only, the people carriers seat 6/7 people,so you would need to hire 2.

That is fine, it would probably allow people to go off and do their own thing anyway.  I would only want it for a few days, we know the island like the back of our hand but it is sometimes nice to try another beach or to go into Zante town etc.

When are you there evertonian?

You'll probably find it easier & cheaper to hire 3 cars than a bigger minibus as there'll be more competition with cars. If you do go that way get them from the same company, preferably 1 of the local companies, at the same time & do a bit of haggling for "bulk" rates. If you need the vehicle(s) from the airport most of the "local" companies will deliver/collect at the airport. Getting 3 cars would give you the flexibility to do as you please & you'll find it a lot easier to get round & find somewhere to park than a minibus

wouldnt you need a special license  PSV or similar if carrying more than 10 people in a minibus
my sis went to france and coz there were 10 of them she had to put a taccograph in the mini bus

Just for info - No special licence required as there are no fare paying passengers - as for the Tacho it is law over here but wouldnt imagine it  would be in Zante

Sorry to be pedantic but you might. In the UK you need D on your license to drive any vehicle with over 8 seats even if the passengers are not paying a fare. This used to be added automatically when you passed your test. However this all changed in1997 and you now have to take a separate test. (if you've already got it your fine)

Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

    * a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers
    * a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:

i.   the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
ii.  the driver is aged 21 iii. the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years
iv. the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
v.  the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
vi. if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle

However since your going to zante you might be ok with a cycling proficiency certificate  ;)

Ian

My licence must be really old as I can drive A D and E ( D on mine is a motor bike with or without a sidecar ;D )
Passed at 16 ( a long time ago)

Just had a look at all the tables on the DVLA website they go back to 1976 ( my test pre-dates them  ;D )

Good old EU regs.... all motor vehicles over 8 seats should have a tacho fitted & depending on when you passed your test you may need to take a test to drive over 7 seaters (regardless whether fare paying or not)
But as already said this is Zante so you'd probably be ok with a fag packet with a signature & a postage stamp on it  ::) ::) ::) ;) ;D

As a bloke that drives over here and back twice a year, cheaper than the price of a plane ticket ! I would suggest cancelling all your flights, hiring a minibus in the UK and driving/Ferry over,

Save you a fortune !!!! ;)
