Astoria Hotel. Any gen guys?
« on: August 06, 2018, 05:31:56 pm »
Hi all.

I've finally recovered from my sojurn to Corfu (never again!) and wondered if any of you guys had first hand experience of the Astoria hotel in Alykes?
We've just booked for three weeks from the middle May next year.

We've read all the usual reports and it looks quite a nice place on the whole.

Ta for any comments.

Have heard good things about the Astoria, no personal experience. Lucky you going for three weeks. The Astoria seems like a pleasant hotel, you'll have a great time :)

Friends of ours have recently returned from the Astoria and although they had a good time they were very dissapointed to be charged 7 euros by the hotel staff to use sunbeds located on the beach. Despite being residents at the hotel they were still charged for using the beds owned by the Astoria !!

We have stayed at the Astoria a few times over the years, and find it a good Hotel , a little dated but you get what you pay for.
The charge for the sunbeds is to stop anyone just using them, you get a card to hand in at lunch time and get the price for the beds off your bill.
Stayed for three weeks last year, had a great time.
We are staying at the Salt Bar this September for three weeks.

We've just come back from the Astoria and thought the location was spot on. The staff on reception was very good always asking if everything was ok. Same couldn't be said about some of the rude wait staff. Hotel tax was 0.50 Euros a night, safe 10 Euros a week and aircon 7 euros a night. The aircon and safe are payable when checking out, the only thing we paid at check in was the hotel tax. We though the drinks and food were a little on the expensive side compared with the surrounding bars and restaurants. Yep it's true they charged us for using the hotel sunbeds 7 Euros for 2 beds. We were not told that they knock the price of the sunbeds off your bill if you use the restaurant. Must say that it's the first time in all of our travels we've been charged for using our own hotel sunbeds. If you're bed and breakfast as we were, the breakfast wasn't that good. We tried it once and ended up with a plate of melon each, the rest didn't look that good. It didn't help that we got a bollocking on our first morning for sitting at the wrong table. Hotel was a little out dated and had a odd odour in the lifts and corridors. Our room was typically Greek, basic but clean. Bedding and towels changed every couple of days. Would we stay here again, of course we would especially if we got another deal.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Looks like a good choice then. We've always stayed at freelance places before and arranged our own flights etc but the cost of flight only to Zante is ridiculous now.
We wanted to travel from a local ish airport and chanced upon a very reasonable deal for the Astoria with Jet2 departing from Leeds/Bradford. Very good flight times - arrive Zante at 13.00 and out three weeks later at 14.00. We can leave our car at a relative's house who is only three miles from LBA and just hop in a taxi.
We've been past the Astoria quite few times in recent years as we usually have a day out to the port at Agios Nikolaos and then on to Skinari for a look at the lighthouse 😎
We had a wander around the mobile homes just up the road as well one year.
Considered buying one but the monthly management charges were too prohibitive.

Ta again for replying and have a good one when you next go. 😆
