Both wife and I are on multiple medications mari; we always take repeat prescription lists in case we're challenged but it's never happened (and we take enough to stock a small branch of Boots ;D).

It's generally recommended that you carry meds in your hand luggage & that's what we've always done with no problem. We carry (amongst other things) co-codamol which is supposedly a restricted drug in Greece. We've never had a problem & have only been queried about it once. I just showed the prescription form & my name on the packaging & was waved through.
Always carry a copy of your prescription, keep the meds in their original packaging & carry it in hand luggage & you'll be fine. Never put essential meds in your checked luggage in case your luggage goes missing.

Echo what Les said above, don't know where the five items allowed story comes from but I don't believe it for a minute. Ours is always in hand baggage because there's no risk of the airline losing it which for my wife, in particular, would be catastrophic.
